Looking for a relaxing weekend getaway? My mother-in-law lives in a beautiful place called Lake County. It's over the St. Helena Mountains, through wine country, and on Clear Lake. The lake is beautiful especially in early summer before the algae makes it green. We went up there for mother's day and had a perfect weekend wine tasting, eating great food, and relaxing.
I would highly recommend the area if you're looking for a lake vacation, don't feel like going all the way to Tahoe and want to do some wine tasting. The area has gotten more popular over the last few years and it has been in wine and food magazines, but it's still doesn't get enough recognition.
My recommendations for a perfect lake and wine tasting trip.
Where to stay - we did a little research on this while we were up there. On the lake there are some cabins - Edgewater Resort it's nothing fancy, but it would be fun if you wanted to have a camp type experience on the lake. I checked out Airbnb and there are lots of houses for rent. There's also the Tallman Hotel which is a B&B in Upper Lake.
Wine Tasting - our favorite winery is Vigilance it has beautiful views of the lake and a great outdoor area for tasting and relaxing. We went to Ceago for the first time and I loved it!! It's gorgeous and the best part is that it's right on the lake. There is a dock so if you have a boat you can tie it up and go inside for a tasting - yummy! There are many more wineries in Lake County - here is a good list if you're looking to do a full day tour.
Food! - We ate at the Tallman Hotel restaurant, Blue Wing, it was delicious. The ambiance is lovely with live music and outdoor seating. It almost feels like you are relaxing in a beautiful backyard. The Saw Shop is another great spot with a gallery ambiance. This restaurant is located in Kelseyville a small town near the lake. I would recommend having lunch there and then exploring the little town - the main street has some cute stores and galleries.
Cheers to summer weekend getaways!!
